Automated Application Deployment

Introduction

As part of this project, we deployed the OpenShift platform for the customer, which provides support for multiple application environments within a single cluster. We implemented a GitOps approach for the Continuous Deployment (CD) pipeline and project onboarding through Git, ArgoCD, and Helm charts. The goal was to create an efficient, secure, and automated platform for application deployment.

Customer Challenges and Requirements

The customer required a robust platform for operating multiple isolated application environments with the possibility of efficient and automated deployment. The key requirements included:

  • Automated deployment of applications and infrastructure using GitOps.
  • Use of ArgoCD for managing declarative deployments.
  • Possibility of onboarding new projects exclusively through Git repository.
  • Management of application and infrastructure configurations using Helm charts.

Implementation

OpenShift Deployment

For effective management of multiple application environments, we chose OpenShift, where each team got their own namespace with defined roles and permissions.

GitOps for Deployment Automation

We built the Continuous Deployment (CD) pipeline on the GitOps approach:

  • Infrastructure code and application configurations were versioned in Git repositories.
  • ArgoCD monitored changes and automatically synchronized the desired state with the running cluster.

Onboarding New Projects and Applications

For onboarding new projects, we created a centralized Git repository containing:

  • Templates for new projects.
  • Standardized Helm charts for application deployment.
  • Policies for access management and security rules.

ArgoCD and Helm Charts for Deployments

Application deployment was declarative:

  • Each project had its own Helm chart defining the application stack.
  • ArgoCD monitored changes in the repository and automatically performed deployment.
  • Rollbacks and versioning of applications were handled through Git history.

Results and Benefits

The deployed solution brought the customer several key benefits:

  • Automation – elimination of manual interventions during application deployment.
  • Consistency – all deployments and configurations were stored in Git.
  • Security – strict access control to individual projects and environments.
  • Easier onboarding – new projects could be introduced quickly and consistently.
  • Controlled release deployment - each release could be controlled at the Git level and with the configured approval flow.

Conclusion

The deployment of OpenShift with the GitOps approach demonstrated how complex IT infrastructure can be operated efficiently and securely. Through the use of ArgoCD and Helm charts, we achieved a high level of automation and deployment stability. This approach enabled the customer to easily manage and scale their applications without unnecessary operational burden.
